Benefits of sound sleep

1) improve in concentration power

We have all woken up after a good night's sleep ready to take on the world. But IKEA's Slumber Survey found one in three Australians rate their sleep as 'poor' to 'terrible'. A bad night's sleep can leave you struggling all day. More than half of us will have problems concentrating after sleeping badly, according to a survey by shopping channel QVC.

2) live longer

Regularly sleeping less than you should is associated with a shorter lifespan, although it is not clear whether little sleep is the cause, or an effect of other illnesses. Studies have found people who routinely sleep for fewer than six hours a night have a higher risk of dying sooner than people of a similar age who sleep for seven or eight hours a night.

3) help in better sex

The better rested you are, the better sex you'll have, according to researchers. The 2010 Sleep in America poll found about 20-30 per cent of men and women felt their family life and sexual relationships had been affected by their sleepiness

4) boost immune system

This is the most important benefit of sound sleep. A goodnight’s sleep boosts up the immune system and prepares the body and mind for the next day’s functioning. It is during a good sleep that prolactin production begins and white cells known as macrophages and leukocytes will be promoted by melatonin and prolactin, the two hormones for the purpose of thinning out some of our gut bacteria to restore harmony in the body.

5) helps in learning

The journal ‘Learning and Memory’ reports that a good sleep helps you consolidate what you have learnt during the day and perform better. Researchers observed that out of 200 college students who were taught to play video games, those who learnt in the morning performed somewhat well immediately after training, did poorly 12 hours later and performed the best the next morning after a good sleep. And the students who learnt in the evening performed better the next morning after sleeping.

6) refresh your heart

Sleep helps your heart work properly. Keeping your heart and cardiovascular system healthy is one of the benefits of getting enough rest. Lack of sleep is linked to heart disease, many cardiovascular problems such as asthma and sleep neap, and even strokes or cardiac arrest. Lower your risk of heart problems with a restful night’s sleep

7) reduces stress

Sleep is a stress reducer. Today’s chaotic lifestyles cause more lack of sleep than ever. People lay awake thinking of bills, work, and other issues. This inhibits the body’s ability to sleep and can elevate stress hormones as a result of living a hectic lifestyle. Sleeping enough can even reverse the unhealthy damages caused by too much stress.
